The photo above was captured by Jeremy Fletcher as he completed a flight from Golden to Invermere, setting a personal best XC distance of some 110km. Jeremy, a Canadian who has been living in New Zealand for the past couple of years came to Golden in mid-July because he had heard that “big-distance” was possible here. On his very first attempt at XC from Mount 7, he achieved his goal of 100+ kilometers to Invermere. On this flight he also set a personal best for altitude gain. Continue reading
Despite the huge amount of snow this past winter, the Lookout Launch on Mt. 7 was completely vehicle accessible on May 20th this year. Just a week prior, the road was blocked with snow at the 11km mark. Having gone up the mountain on the evening of May 20th with the intent to fly out of the 9k launch, I was surprised to find that the road was in excellent shape right to the Lookout.
Flyers can take advantage of the “Mount 7 Up Truck” service for getting up to the Mt7 launch (The Lookout) or use the service as a way to retrieve your vehicle at the end of the day.
Well it’s the time of year when the end of winter is just over the horizon. Thoughts start turning to acquiring “the latest, greatest and coolest” gear for 2017. Simultaneously, enticing equipment ads start showing up – now usually in the form of beautifully made YouTube or Vimeo videos.
The 2017 hang gliding and paragliding season in Golden BC will soon be upon us. Time to get signed up for the event of the season – The annual Willi-XC Challenge…
In 90 seconds you can get a quick overview of why Golden is a great adventure tourism destination. When you’re not flying off Mount 7, check out other activities in this great little video:
In 2016 The Willi-XC will be bigger and better! We will be celebrating the 20th Willi, the 25th year of paragliding competitions in Golden, and 40+ years of hang gliding in the Columbia Valley. All pilots who have flown Golden, past and present, are invited to join us for a Retro Night, Saturday, July 30 – a band, dancing, old friends and likely some stories! Wear an old t-shirt or flight suit, and enjoy a reunion with old pilots and new. You don’t need to participate in the Willi to attend.
Here’s what you need to know to participate in the actual flying competition…
